The biggest surprise is that this is a fantastic phone, arguably easier to recommend than any other Samsung mobile this year. Especially if you’re in the UK and want a Samsung Galaxy phone with the Snapdragon 865. One of the true highlights of the Galaxy S20 FE is that the UK 5G version comes with the Snapdragon 865 platform, rather than the usual Exynos chipset you’ll find in the high-end Note 20 series and Galaxy S20.
So, how did the two phones fare? As it turns out, single-core performance is largely similar between the two chipsets, but the multi-core result highlights a serious advantage for the Snapdragon 865. With a final score of 3,167, compared with the Exynos 990’s 2,779, the S20 FE 5G is roughly 18% faster with regards to multi-core processing. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 4500mAh battery, matching the Galaxy S20 Plus and outperforming all the other S20 models in my tests. This is almost certainly down to the Snapdragon 865 chip, which seems to be far more efficient than its Exynos counterpart. At 6.5-inches, the FE sits between the smaller S20 and the larger S20 Plus. For me, it feels like the perfect size and I really appreciate the flat display which is far superior for gaming than a curved panel. Unless you don't care about software suport for the future and you just want a decent device for light gaming and content consumption (oh yes, everything watched on this phone looks and sounds great).

That's lower than the Galaxy S20, which notched 3,147. The iPhone 11 reached a score of 3,251. The phone’s speakers are pretty good – they’re not top-end, either in terms of audio quality or maximum volume, but they’re fit for purpose whether you’re gaming, watching a movie or just listening to music from the phone. Now that there will be no Exynos variant on sale, you will have to pay more for 5G - around €700, while the 4G model is expected to cost €630 in Germany. On the GFXBench graphics test (Aztec Ruins Vulkan test off-screen), the Galaxy S20 FE reached 1,325 frames (21 frames per second). The regular Galaxy S20 hit 1,319 and the iPhone 11 1,481. Samsung's OLED panel really shined when watching an episode of Cobra Kai. As Sam LaRusso crashed into a dessert table, the explosion of color really came through, with pops of green, blue, brown and orange.

The front-facing camera is a 32MP f/2.0 snapper, but note that if you take a regular selfie, you’re not getting a 32MP picture – that’s because this sensor is paired with a wide-angle lens. You’ll only get a high-res picture if you take a wider shot, while if it’s a close-up featuring just you, the photo will be automatically cropped. This means it's dust resistant and water resistant up to 1.5m deep for 30 minutes. However, it's not waterproof so isn't recommended for snorkelling. By comparison, the regular Galaxy S20 lasted a slightly longer 9:31 over T-Mobile's network, and the iPhone 11 endured for a whopping 11:16. Samsung has kept a high-quality 120Hz panel for the S20 FE, giving you super-smooth scrolling. It has a 240Hz sampling rate too, for very responsive gaming. Why Samsung didn’t add this feature to the Note 20 feels bizarre to me.
