About this deal

Before discussing other models, it’s important to mention that DJI has ND filters specific to the DJI Mini 3 Pro, but they are ND16, ND64, and ND256. Undeniably, even the best camera drones find it hard to capture unique shots in harsh or highly bright conditions. For the use of ND filters with the Mini 3 Pro, or with any prosumer drone, we should focus on Shutter Speed, as it is the main parameter we want to control. By doubling the shutter speed, we reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor by one stop. As an example, by increasing the shutter speed from 1/25 to 1/50, we reduce the luminosity by one stop In some countries, the use of aftermarket components on drones can result in your drone being considered “privately built,” which could affect where you can fly your drone and/or any insurance or warranty claims you need to make. The fit of the filters is another thing to consider. DJI’s own ND filters will likely have the best fit and alignment, preventing any risk of light leakage or distortion.

When shooting video the optimal shutter speed is 1/50 or 1/60 of a second, according to the frame rate we are using. These are not very slow values, therefore we don’t need very strong filters Long-exposure drone photography is also gaining in popularity. Capturing long-exposure photos on bright days would need a lot more filtering, for example, using an ND256 or higher filter. Third-party ND filters ND16 reduces light by 1/16. An ND16 filter can reduce 6 stops of light, allowing you to slow the shutter speed from 1/400s to 1/25s. However, if you film in primarily bright and sunny conditions, then the DJI filter set will likely work well for you 99 percent of the time.

Most importantly, the ND filters reduce the intensity of light entering the camera. This way, you can easily control the shutter speed and aperture. The 3-piece filters help reduce glare and reflections, improve colors and decrease light entering the lens. DJI has different official ND filters for their drones and cameras, like ND4, ND8, ND16, ND32, ND64, ND128, and more.

Previous drones in the DJI Mini series saw third parties such as Neewer and Freewell become household names for ND filters for drones. Normally, the ND2-ND32 is sufficient even in strong sun and there is no need to change the filter! You test shortly before the flight and set the appropriate value by ring marking. The adjustment is freely circumferential without stopping or snapping. The effect of increasing neutral density is achieved here by twisting two polarizing filters located one above the other. When shooting timelapses with drones there are some specific limitations compared to traditional cameras, as with drones in most cases we cannot use a shutter speed slower than one second without losing detail due to camera shake. As an example, with the Mini 3 Pro on a bright day, using the minimum ISO value of 100, we obtain a shutter speed of about 1/8000 for correct exposure. Assuming that we want to use a SS of approximately 1/50 for the correct amount of motion blur. Let’s see which strength value we need

For the Mini 3 Pro, you more realistically need ND8, N16, and N32, which you can interchange based on the environmental conditions. Glass ND filters are also advisable because they protect your lens better and are easier to clean. They are also less likely to impact the color of the light being filtered than plastic filters, as claimed. Other factors to consider There is a widespread misconception that ND filters are needed to expose correctly on very bright days, but this is not true. We can use three tools to get the correct exposure: ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed My main channel is VicVideopic (in English): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgaBlrFDONJ4BSEUHa2cLKg For example, under this rule for natural motion blur at 24 frames per second, the shutter speed would be 1/48 seconds. The filter frame is made of soft Aircraft aluminum alloy. Each side of the filter contains grooves that enable easy holding for removal and installation. Freewell is a brand that over the years has consistently produced quality filters for drones at reasonable prices, even though not the cheapest Some third parties also offer polarized filters, which help manage reflections when filming over water.

Allows you to slow down the shutter speed: The photographer can capture lengthy exposures and motion blurs. In most cases, the strength of ND filters is expressed by an ND value indicating the number of stops of light reduction, starting from ND2 which reduces the luminosity by one stop Luminosity Stops The number associated with an ND filter indicates that how much light enters the lens in terms of a fraction. And when the DJI Mini 3 Pro was finally released, photographers who’ve used any of Freewell Gear products were looking forward to their version of ND filters for the DJI Mini 3 Pro.A neutral density works like the light’s volume control. So, when the light entering is minimized, you can comfortably shoot in severe lighting conditions. This way, your shots attain artistic results.
